Converting Crowgreaves Farm Barns

Brief

We were recently commissioned for underfloor heating on another collaborative project with Bramble Developments. This Shropshire-based developer specialises in converting barns and old buildings full of history into beautiful modern-day living and working spaces.

Crowgreaves Farm in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, part of the Apley Estate, was an old farmyard being developed into a commercial storage and distribution unit. The client was Imperial Bricks Ltd, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of the finest traditional handmade, wire-cut and pressed bricks.

The farmyard consisted of several historic barns and needed floor insulation, underfloor heating, and liquid screed so that the buildings could become suitable storage and working areas.

Key Considerations

With many historic barns, they were not built with damp proofing, meaning they are prone to becoming cold and wet in winter or rainy seasons. This would not be ideal conditions for the client, and needed to be addressed before we laid pipes or flowing screed.

One barn atrium was over 250m² in size, requiring us to place the manifold and design underfloor heating loops in a way that would not compromise the efficiency of the heating setup.

What We Achieved

Our underfloor heating and liquid screed Shropshire team undertook the design, supply, and installation of underfloor heating systems to cover the various storage, open-plan office spaces, meeting rooms, and the 250m² atrium.

Once the design was agreed with the client, our team of expert heated floor installers installed thermal floor insulation boards, with a polythene membrane that would help prevent rising damp. Following that, perimeter expansion foam and 50mm Cemfloor, a fast-drying cement-based flowing screed, were used to finish the floor.
