What Heating Grants Are Available to UK Businesses?
For many businesses, cutting operational costs and reducing carbon emissions are very important, with utilities and heating being among the highest areas of focus. Heating is a major contributor to this, but that said, many businesses find it difficult to finance such improvements.
There are several government schemes and business grants, that support UK businesses with upgrading their heating infrastructure, particularly the heat source, with heat pump installation as a priority. Other grants fund areas that improve heating performance, such as insulation and double glazing.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The BUS is the primary heating grant available to small businesses and homeowners across the country to improve their heating. Up to £7,500 can be granted towards the costs of replacing a gas or oil boiler with a renewable heat source.
In most cases, this to offset the cost of a heat pump installation, but it can also be used to install a biomass boiler. The benefits of a heat pump for heating a business are many, from lower running costs to their compatibility with renewable energy sources like solar panels. Heat pumps are also one of the most efficient heat sources to combine with underfloor heating.
Who is Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Small businesses (less than 250 employees) in England and Wales may apply for this grant, provided they own the property and have a valid EPC certificate issued within the last 10 years. The EPC certificate must show that your business has undertaken other energy-efficiency improvements, such as loft insulation.
A certified heat pump installer, such as those who work with EasyFlow, have to apply for the BUS on the business’ behalf. Once they agree to the installation quote, we send the application to Ofgem with all relevant details. If approved, the grant will be taken off your heat pump installation invoice.
To find out the finer details on if your business qualifies for the BUS, check the government website. Alternatively, ask our heat pump installation consultants to assess your property’s ability to have a pump installed, funded by the scheme.
Other Heating Grants Available
Local authorities are always offering grants to businesses in their region to offset the cost of energy-efficient heating improvements, from installing a new heat source, to underfloor heating or insulation. These are not available forever, as there is often limited time to apply for them.
As of the end of 2024, the following local authority grants are still currently available to help you offset the cost of a new heat source. Be sure to check with your local authority’s website from time to time, as new grants may be made available in the future.
Neath Port Talbot Green Renewable Fund
Certain businesses based in this area of Wales can apply to the Green Renewable Fund for up to £25,000 towards adopting systems that implement “green technology” – a focused reliance on renewable and low-carbon energy.
This grant applies not just only for heat pump installation, but also for renewable power generation compatible with heat pumps. Our article on renewable energy compatibility with underfloor heating details the benefits and disadvantages of this if you choose to pursue both options in this grant.
Net Zero Worcestershire
The Net Zero Worcestershire Programme primarily provides an energy-efficiency assessment to help eligible businesses discover ways to reduce their carbon emissions. It also applies a grant that covers up to 75% of costs associated with implementing those recommendations.
This grant covers many aspects of heating efficiencies, from wall and floor insulation to heat pump installation, provided the review recommends these improvements for your business.
