Chapel Conversion, Underfloor Heating in Shrewsbury

Brief

We were delighted to be approached by a client for a one of a kind job. A beautiful, historic chapel in Shrewsbury, Shropshire was approved to be converted into luxury accommodation.

Our underfloor heating Shropshire team were tasked with laying floor insulation, underfloor heating, and liquid screed to the ground floor of this amazing building.

Key Considerations

This was a grade II listed building with varying levels of elevation across its floorplan. For our work to be approved, we had to meticulously design a layout that would not interfere with the historic elements of the building.

One level of elevation – where the pews used to sit – would intentionally sit at a significantly higher level than areas around it. Zoning for this section had to be done in a way that would not create potential air locks in the system.

Lastly, we had to calculate the right thicknesses of floor insulation and choose a liquid screed that matched the original foundation as closely as possible.

What We Achieved

Our underfloor heating Shrewsbury surveyors visited the chapel and carefully measured the floor and elevations, noting any areas of concern. With these measurements we used specialist CAD software to calculate the perfect layout, and the right thickness of floor insulation.

Once our design was approved, we got to work laying floor insulation underfloor heating pipes across the chapel floors. We covered the concrete sub-base with a vapour barrier, then laid the piping into the clip rail system.

For the elevated area, we clipped the pipes into the floor insulation between the supports. Once we pressure test the system, cement liquid screed will be laid on the lower floor area of the chapel.
